There has long been a creative connection between the perv community and fans of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. In fact, back when I was just getting started in professional writing in the early ’90s, one of the most inspiring things I discovered was that some of the most obsessed cyberpunk fans out there also liked rampant pervery in all its forms, including not only straight-up BDSM and alt-sex, but cosplay, furry and plushie play and, of course, dirty filk.
But what I didn’t expect back then — I was so young and naive! — was that I was not the world’s only kinky Lovecraft freak who also dug Nick Cave and the Dead Kennedys. In fact, the Stooges songs and Christian Death fashion statements I’d long been obsessing over had germinated in my fellow postadolescent geekazoid malcontents, creating a sub-generation of freaks who loved some combination of horror movies, body piercing, The Day The Earth Stood Still, video games, porn,
William Gibson, punk rock, Jarboe, German Expressionism, occult tattoos, Das Ich, bondage, conical bras, Blade Runner, Einsturzende Neubauten, Thulsa Doom, sex parties, Sandman, spanking, and Boone’s Apple Wine. This, for me, was Heaven, or a Hell worth dying for.
Those heady years were early ’90s, when The Matrix was something your roommate had stolen from the Sonoma State computer lab and used to print ASCII porn at 3am while high on nitrous, and you bitched him out because you had to be at your fuckin’ temp job at 9am so you could make money to get Social D tickets before they sold out. How life’s changed since then! Whole new generations have grown up in a world where sci-fi movies, Harry Potter, video games and “alternative music” are de rigueur in popular culture, and you don’t have to be a freak to read comic books.
But in the beginning, Blue Blood magazine, then in print, was one of the O.G.’s giving voice to the weird sex possible on the fringes of reality, and exploring the collision of genre media, alternative culture and sex. So it’s with great pleasure that I got to check out their new site, EroticFandom.com, which proves that the alt-geek crossbreed has lost none of its creative fertility.

Welcome to Blue Blood’s Erotic Fandom! One of our original primary goals when Blue Blood first started so many years ago, was to integrate all the cool creative subcultures we’ve enjoyed and been a part of over the years. We set out to engage in a sort of a counterculture cross pollination, because we know nobody is really 100 percent one thing, no matter what the label.
