This Adult Time scene is a very creative and original one. It shows Kenzie Reeves at a bar, having a conversation with her step-brother, and as they initiate their interaction, the comedic tone of the scene becomes apparent, because as they talk about the shenanigans they used to do when they were younger, they mention things that seem to be going one way, but they take a detour into another completely different topic that changes the initial understanding of the conversation. For example, Kenzie’s step-brother tells her that he is so relieved that his mother believed his stiff socks were like that because of masturbation reasons, when in actuality they were like that because he stepped on wood glue, and she would’ve gotten angry if she ever found out about this.
These types of witty elements bring a lighthearted tone to the scene, turning it into a brilliant comedy, as they are often remarks, fourth-wall breaks, or actions that are presented facetiously, but played with the outmost seriousness by the characters.
Then, as step-bro and step-sis are talking, the bartender cuts in and asks Kenzie if she’d like to join him for a “private conversation”. This of course upsets the step-brother, who immediately follows them and finds them fooling around in the bathroom. Here, following the whimsical nature of the scene, even Ryan Keely, Kenzie’s step-mom, comes out of the blue to put a stop to her shenanigans, arguing that they should all go home and spend some quality time together as a family, without any strangers in the way.
Kenzie obeys her step-mother, but not before bidding farewell to the disappointed bartender, and giving him a ray of hope, telling him that if his mom ever marries her dad, then they could finish what they started in that restroom, hinting at the fact that she can only be with someone truly close to her, and as things stand, everything is unrelated, Unrelated X.
