From the introduction: “Since the mid-1990’s, Forrest and I have been setting up full blown location studios in all sorts of unlikely and underground places. We’ve set up lights and backdrops in wind-blown theater parking lots in the middle of the night, while bands played their shows, in co-ed strip clubs, and crammed behind the pool table in the back of noisy dive bars. Sometimes it’s a real challenge, but this is how we shoot our personal work. We like to capture the moments in their real environments. For this compendium, we chose only images which were actually shot in California. Some of the deathrockers in this volume grew up here and some are transplants and some were just passing through. Forrest and I had a lot of debates, while hunched over a contact sheet with loupes in hand, over whether a particular photo was really more deathrock or more Gothic, as we needed a methodology for honing down what to share. When we started shooting, there were very few photographers who would ever shoot anyone gothic or punk or tattooed or pierced or fetish and the few who did approached the subject matter in a gritty unattractive purely anthropological manner, like they were going to the zoo. We wanted to create respectful and celebratory work. We wanted to capture the joy and tribal sense of community which we experienced in the various subterranean worlds we documented. We wanted the flamboyant beauty we saw to resonate with other people the way it did for us. We wanted the people we photographed to look the way they looked in our minds’ eyes when we recalled the excitement of nightlife at midnight.”

Serafina and Zoe’s scene was probably my favorite, because both girls had a cute college-girl look, so it was easy to imagine them as a couple 21-year-old english majors fooling around in their dorm room (and, hell, maybe they are ;). There’s genuine affection displayed by the couple, which is just so refreshing.

Nikki and Zille’s scene was the one I anticipated the most, as I’m familiar with both models, and there’s just something a little different (and fun) about watching someone you know get in on. It helps when they’re both gorgeous and obviously very much enjoying each other’s company. The girls take turns at giving each other enthusiastic orgasms with their tongues and fingers, and finishing the scene kissing and cuddling in each other’s arms.

The scene with Zille and Serafina is a bit older (shot in 2002), and a has slightly different feel than they other two — a bit more of a “fantasy” piece, with silk robes and more extravagant decor. The camera work is a little funkier too, with a few zoom-ins that don’t really work. It’s still a very sexy scene though, including Zille fucking Serafina with a big black strap-on, and some fun with latex gloves. Zille looks elegant with black hair and lingerie contrasting her smooth, pale skin. Serafina ain’t chopped liver either, and her innocent good looks play against Zille’s more vampish sensuality very nicely.

Sappho’s Girls Vol. 1 is a fairly utilitarian name, and the packaging isn’t fancy either. The DVD menus are fairly simple, and the camerawork is passable, but nothing to write home about. But there’s no doubt about the content: real lesbians having the kind of sex they enjoy, on camera so we can all enjoy it.

I started modeling in college, as I knew a degree in comparative literature wasn’t going to get me very far looking for jobs! I started out doing porn stuff: “solo masturbation” videos and g/g stuff with friends. It didn’t even really occur to me to get into the fetish modeling scene, even though I worked at a fetish nightclub at the time, and while I loved doing bondage on my own time, I didn’t know I could do it in images!

Doing porn led me to start my own adult site, www.darkplay.net, and I’ve been doing that for years, now. However, at the moment, I am focusing on working as a model with photographers I’ve always wanted to work with, before I eventually quit modeling and go on the other side of the camera – being a photographer is my first love!

Until then, I want to do lots of fetish and bondage work, and some arty-glamorous stuff too. If I do do porn-y stuff for other people, I want it to be in the “arty-glamorous” category.

Favorite photographers?

My favorite photographers to work with are Malcolm Weir, Owen Johnson, Craig Morey, Michael Manning, Midori, Amelia G. & Forrest Black, Larry Utley, and well, many more – I like to have fun in shoots, and I do my best to provide a photographer with what s/he envisions, so I tend to get along well with most photographers and have happy memories of the shoots.

Favorite fellow models?

My favorite fellow models? What a long list! I always adore working with Sasha Monet! Oh, and Lena Ramon is delightful! A certain very hot tattooed babe named Nikki Brand is right up there at the top – those are some very sizzling memories! I’ve never gotten to work with Kumi as a model, just as a photographer – I need to fix that! There are quite a number of models I’d love to work with before I retire! Um, but that might just be because I want to fondle them…

Hmmm … favorite publications/sites? Well, I’ve seen enough porn in my life that I don’t tend to look at porn sites much, although I sometimes hang about ishotmyself.com. I tend to keep up with my friend’s projects and read livejournal all too much.
