Gothic Beauty 25 Year Reunion of Original Artists, Lots of Great Swag

Gothic Beauty Magazine is doing such a short Kickstarter that I almost missed that this was happening. They are kickstarting a calendar which features some of their favorite images from their 25 years of publishing, with a focus on their early years. (Personally, I’m going to pledge for the calendar, plus I need lots of Gothic Beauty Boxes and T-shirt reward.)

Although Gothic Beauty is a SFW magazine, one which, in my opinion, verges on the prudish, a lot of the best altporn photographers have been published in the magazine. I think this is because, no matter how soft or explicit, alt work has a lot of style and attitude, so a lot of models we would love naked and sexy in the alt world obviously look fantastic and stylish with their clothes on as well. The look and subcultures are the throughlines.

For this Project, the Gothic Beauty team has pulled together a who’s who of early two thousands alternative photography and altmodel work, with many contributors you will recognize. Alt aficionados will be particularly pleased to see contributions from AltStar Hall of Famer Amelia G (BlueBlood, GothicSluts, BarelyEvil, EroticFandom), AltStar Hall of Famer Forrest Black (BlueBlood, GothicSluts, BarelyEvil, EroticFandom), Apnea (GodsGirls, SuicideGirls, SuperCult), Angela Ryan (BurningAngel, CrazyBabe, ShinySluts, HollyRandall, MisterDevious, RetroKitten, BlueBlood), Ulorin Vex (HollyRandall, LatexHeaven), Lithium Picnic (SuicideGirls), Darenzia (Juliland, GodsGirls, BlueBlood, GothicSluts, BarelyEvil, EroticFandom), Batty (BlueBlood, GothicSluts, BarelyEvil), and more. One of my favorite things about this Project is they are posting regular in-depth interviews on the Kickstarter where contributors share behind-the-scenes moments and their thoughts on goth. These are some really excellent and interesting interviews.

Most of us alternative enthusiasts are suckers for makeup, right? I know there are people out there who aren’t into makeup, but for me, it helps me look like I feel, and I have so much fun with different looks and styles. And if you are a makeup addict like me, you probably agree that a good lash can make all the difference, which is why it is so important to find the right ones.

LashyDoodle by BlueBlood‘s Amelia G and Forrest Black is the lash dream we have been waiting for, vegan and cruelty free, and hypoallergenic, which is amazing for those of us who are sensitive af, like me. Corwin Prescott Temperance Kickstarter Last Day

Corwin Prescott has been an AltPorn Awards nominee for Best Alternative Erotica Photographer. Back when Zivity (RIP) was still around, his work was some of the most interesting on the site. Right now, he is running the final day of his Kickstarter for Temperance. This is to be a pair of elegant softcover books featuring his recent photography of nude models. In his artist statement, he explains that his goal with these images was to kind of let the models do whatever they wanted, rather than imposing what he wanted on the images. While, within the alt community, model empowerment of this sort may strike some as unoriginal or almost typical, this kind of approach is still sadly VERY rare in mainstream erotic photography, and it is nice to see a photographer like Corwin Prescott who has created such a substantial body of work. It is not like he shot one or two people with this approach and got bored. That would be easy, while what he has created is hard. He is perhaps best knows for his 50 Models in 50 States project, which was also funded through Kickstarter. I also think it is cool that the print versions of Temperance have a unique design feel and are being printed in such an offbeat creative and pretty way. Temperance is a dual volume, softcover photography book by Corwin Prescott of fine art nude images shot over the course of four years.

“How much can you remove yourself from a photo you have taken? I put a mirror, sometimes two, sometimes three, between myself and the model. I want to tell the story the subject wants to tell. The photographer is the ghost of every image. I have always wanted to place attention elsewhere and not to stand under the lights, or in the gaze of others.

The further I can remove myself from a portrait the better. I used to want to see myself reflected in the eyes of every person I come across but even that feels too close now. Now I take the effort to look at people as indirectly as I can. Capture them as if I am not there, or am there, however they prefer. Temperance is my attempt to abstain from influence as best I can and to record what follows.

For three years I spent months at a time in a small room photographing portraits not knowing what I had to say. I think because it was my time to stop speaking…my time to accept a silence I often run from. Photography is the greatest meditation on a moment we have. This is a collection of moments I have witnessed and done my best not to tamper with. The hands of men have muddied far too much in this world; I hope that I can touch lightly enough not to stir the sediment of misery sitting just below life’s surface, but to calm or allow a hand for escape.

I search for peace rather than joy or abrasion. Even peace is often melancholy. Maybe the mood of Temperance is still a reflection of me. I can only walk so far away.”

BlueBlood‘s Amelia G and Forrest Black are working with painter Vaughn Belak on a coffee table book entitled Dodging Knives and Throwing Bullets and it features his newest paintings! Vaughn Belak is a talented artist, and his work speaks to the alternative culture. From the very beginning, Vaughn has developed a unique style, impossible to mistake for anything else. His early work features a mix of his own characters, as well as pop culture and horror ones, such as Nosferatu, Poe, and Wolverine. My favorites of his paintings portray a strong, independent woman, she is beautiful, she is dark and unapologetic. She has big eyes, dark makeup and often horns. Vaughn’s characters all have that defying look, they couldn’t give a fuck about your opinion, and they are hot as hell. The first glance is enough to see why his art is appealing to the fans of the alternative/goth culture, and the more you look, the prettier it gets, after all, the devil’s in the details. A form of this article ran in our companion magazine AltStar, but I wanted to post here too because there are only a couple hours left to pledge his Kickstarter and get the limited edition T-shirt he is making along with his book. I’m always fascinated by the possibilities that modern technologies offer to contemporary artists. While once art was reserved to the elites, both in terms of production and use, it is now accessible to all – on one side allowing also non-masters on the stage, but on the other side allowing those with the skill and talent to express themselves without the strict limitation of the rich guy of the time, and to grow your own niche of public that resonates with your tastes.

Vaughn Belak is – in this respect – a son of our times: a talented artist that, half a century ago would have had to settle for commissions or take another road entirely, and that now – instead – is allowed to show us his creativity and skill. The dark, gothic themes are brought forward with an effective use of black and colours, mixing media with no regard to academy but only to his personal twist on fairy tales and pop imagery. Allan Amato’s SERAPH photo book Kickstarter is in its final day. The good people at BlueBlood just reminded me we’d been meaning to let APN’s readers know about this project. SERAPH is a sequel of sorts to Amato’s Award nominated SLIP book, with a starker and more in-your-face approach. The book includes alt superstars like Stoya, Skin Diamond, Jiz Lee, and Luzia Lowe, who was kind enough to appear on the very first cover of our own magazine and probably my personal all time favorite model April Flores.

Instead of the usual artist pitch on Kickstarter, his video is mostly just the models talking about their bodies and their feelings and their finances and their sense of empowerment. April Flores talking about processing her grief being widowed through her work is incredibly moving. I literally started crying watching her part of the video and the juxtaposition of the photos of her is wonderful. A really interesting bonus for all backers of this Kickstarter is a mini documentary Allan Amato shot while putting this book together, which will be a longer mix of his five and a half minute Kickstarter video. Whether or not you can pledge this project, you should really stop by the SERAPH page and watch the video. It is really something out of the ordinary.

GENESIS.

One year ago, I launched a book on Kickstarter called SLIP. I wanted to see whether I could nudge the narrative concerning how we view nudity and sexuality just a little bit forward, as much for my own education as for others. The book explored what it means to be a naked professional, stripped bare and utterly vulnerable. But I knew I didn’t want to end the story there. What struck me then, was how often the models expressed the empowerment they feel, the confidence that grew alongside and inevitably over the fear. Naked armor, of a sort.

SERAPH is at its core, my interpretation of that experience, a way to continue that conversation. If SLIP was dark and contorted, then SERAPH would be bright and unflinching; an exorcism of the architecture, the retouching, reforming and reconstituting of women spat out of the culture machine.

I’m altogether too at ease crouching behind elaborate lighting, syrupy narratives and the blessed, velvety crutch of Photoshop. I put all that aside for the SERAPH series. No coverage for the models, no filters for me. I want to tell this story the best and only way I’m equipped to. I hope I succeeded. I fucking know they did.

Instaxxx: A Book Of Nude Instant Photos Kickstarter

Igor from DrivenByBoredom is doing a Kickstarter of hot naked girls. Many of the girls he shoots are alternative, so you know you want to check this out. The project is called Instaxxx: A Book Of Nude Instant Photos and he shares personal stories of how he first started shooting naughty Polaroids and how the Instax technology has filled that artistic need. In addition to the book, he is offering signed Instax from Stoya and April O’Neil.

When I was 19, my girlfriend was leaving town for a month and she had an idea. This was a time before sexting and Skype so she bought me a plastic Barbie Polaroid camera and told me I could take naked photos of her before she left so that I wouldn’t cheat on her. These photos were some of the first naked photos I ever took and those early memories created a lifelong love for nude photography on instant film.

I soon started photographing all my friends, girlfriends and lovers nude on Polaroid. This was a documentation of my nascent sexuality and some of the most exciting photography I was doing (at the time I was mostly photographing bands). I switched from the Barbie cam to my mom’s old Spectra and eventually to the Polaroid 600, which I used until Polaroid stopped making Instant film. I had photographed hundreds of women nude on Polaroid and I didn’t want to stop.

Alarm Audra Kawaii Coffee Table Book

I know I’ve raved about BlueBloods before. Well, really I do that every time I see a set by them but for good reason! Today, I found another reason. Alarm Audra is in the process of putting out a kawaii inspired coffee table book. Yes, it includes nudes. And so much other cool stuff including her own artwork! You know what else is cool? Forrest Black is going to be helping, which means that the same designer who has helped Dandy Warhols, Radiohead, and Everclear is helping with this book! How can it not come out awesome? It just makes me even more excited to check out.

All my fangirling aside, this is a really cool project. As an artist I love seeing other artists thrive and I love seeing them follow their passion. And the truth is, I have no doubt this is going to be a really cool book, which is why I’m encouraging you all to check out the Kickstarter page, even if it is just for more info, but donating not only gets you the book, but also gets your name in the book and other swag like T-shirts, fan signs, character sketches, and even a chance to chat with Alarm Audra. RazorCandi: Coffee table art book project

That is right folks, the beautiful RazorCandi is working on a coffee table art book project, that is going to be published by BlueBlood. You can watch a video of her talking about her art (and looking hot) and see some previews from the book at her book project link.

If you are familiar with California Deathrock Art Book and you like it, you’re bound to fall in love with this one. This book is all about a voyage, if you like, through a decade of RazorCandi‘s most exquisite works of art, a collection of the most extraordinary pictures, with a lot of different styles and settings. You will get 172 pages of content with high quality pictures of the ever creative and beautiful RazorCandi, who has recently won the APN Awards for Best Altporn Membership site- Solo girl and Best Punk Shoot.

RazorCandi’s is one Kickstarter very worth checking out. For sure, you want to at least watch the video on her page and probably order the book. I don’t know what photos she will use in the book, but some of the ones below are personal favorites.

Blue Blood Punk Humor Zine BLT Kickstarter Update

The Blue Blood crew has been making a lot of noise about their new BLT Punk Zine or Black Leather Times) Omibus Kickstarter and I just got notified that they released a new batch of cool t-shirt designs an additional reward goals. I have to admit I am a fan of obnoxious t-shirts and I think these would fit my collection. The BLT Zine Omnibus book looks like a good read too. I’d love the see what the originals of Blue Blood magazine were like.

I’m actually surprised at how little successful crowd funding comes out of the AltPorn genre. It seems like such a perfect fit, but besides this and the previously successful California Deathrock Portraits book, also from Blue Blood, I really have not seen much done with this ‘new ecconomy’ tool. Maybe it’s the restrictions on adult, as I see that neither of these project are what I would expect from people I know mostly for making amazing AltPorn either.

APN Award nominees Amelia G and Forrest Black, of Blue Blood fame, are doing a coffee table book of deathrock style. If the example pictures are any indication, I am going to memorize every page for gothic makeup and clothing ideas. According to the BlueBlood blog, some of the altmodels I have enjoyed on their membership sites will be in the California Deathrock book. This includes Dahlia Dark, Merrydeath, Domiana, and Vampirabat. Those are some enormous gorgeous deathrock boobies. I love all of these girls’ style. Also according to the BlueBlood blog, there are only a couple hours left to pledge via Kickstarter, but you’ll be able to also buy the book later via Barnes & Noble and Amazon, just for a higher price. Looks like they are two dollars away from doing the book as a hardcover. I can’t wait until California Deathrock comes out! I love this photography.

Since the mid-1990’s, my partner Forrest Black and I have been setting up location studios in all sorts of unlikely and underground places. We’ve shot our personal work everywhere from behind the pool table in a dive bar to in the parking lot behind a theatre where we had to run a bunch of end-to-end extension cords out the back to power our lights.

When we started shooting, there were very few photographers who would ever shoot anyone gothic or punk or tattooed or pierced or fetish and the few who did approached the subject matter in a gritty unattractive anthropological manner, like they were going to the zoo. I wanted to create respectful and celebratory work. I wanted to capture the joy and tribal sense of community which I experienced in the various subterranean worlds we documented. I wanted the flamboyant beauty I saw to resonate with other people the way it did for me. I wanted the people we photographed to look the way they looked in my mind’s eye when I recalled the excitement of nightlife at midnight.

The West Coast deathrock scene has been one of Forrest’s and my favorite subcultures to shoot. We’ve been immortalizing deathrockers for more than a decade now. I love the way deathrock tends to combine the stylishness of gothic culture with the no apologies attitude of punk.

We’ve shot deathrock bands ranging from Cinema Strange to 45 Grave. We’ve shot DJs and promoters from Satoki and Thee Gabe to Shane Taleda and Jenn and Dave Bats. We’ve shot publishers from New Grave’s Matt Riser to Ghastly’s Jeremy. We’ve shot deathrock pinups from Dahlia Dark and Domiana to Scar 13 and Fetus de Milo. Plus a huge assortment of other folks who make the scene what it is, from author Clint Catalyst to clothing designer Karen Schultz.

I would love to be able to present our deathrock body of work as a coffee table book. Approximately 40% of these images were shot on film, so we will need to get scanning done. We can’t work on the computer like we used to, so we’ll need some graphics help processing the most recent digital images. And of course we need to print the book. These are the things we will use the funding for, if we meet our Kickstarter goal. If we exceed our goal, we will add more pages and, if we exceed our goal by a bunch, then we will do a larger print run with full wholesale bookstore distribution.
