Once again, BurningAngel has swept the AVN Awards with more than 30 nomination. Alternative girls seem to be rocking the AVN Awards in general this year. I’m sure I’m missing some who others would count or who I just didn’t catch in the long list from the AVN Awards site. For example, I wouldn’t necessarily have picked Justine Joli out, except that BlueBlood has 22 updates of her and BurningAngel has 2, so I’m going to defer to their judgment that she counts. Something about Bonnie Rotten just seems like a conformist regular girl with a lot of tattoos, but she does have a lot of tattoos, so I’m including her too.

But I do have some quibbles. First, I couldn’t find any legit listings (non-torrent) for Penthouse’s Steampunk Alternasluts (nominated for Best Web Premiere), and I’m not going to click on a torrent link in Google, so I’m just guessing from the name that Penthouse must have done something alt there (although not being able to find it buts a question mark next to Best Web Premiere.) Second, how did BurningAngel get nominated for Best Original Song, but not for Best Soundtrack? Third and more significantly, like last year’s AVN Awards Best Alternative Site nominations, I am scratching my head again this year. WTF does AVN think “alternative” means? I have this theory that all the erotic sites which utilize both are music culture influenced. From a creative standpoint, what do you like about color versus black and white?

Richard Avery: Wow! That’s a tough one. I have many thoughts and opinions on photography today, digital, color, b&w and the future. I’ll give you some of the basics… No matter what you do or use, there has to be a vision behind it. As an artist it doesn’t matter what you do or who you do. You just have to show that you know what you want and are very clear. Quality is most important. b&w or color, it just needs to be good. Today most photographers rely on photoshop tricks and forget about the subject. Tricks are for kids!!! A great photo is one that will last the test of time. I am old school and love b&w, but I enjoy color a lot as well. That is why we have fun with both. Some set-ups look good in color, but some just scream… Do me in b&w! Last, most photographers make the mistake of trying to do too much. All I try and do is capture the grrl and who she is. Personality is what I do. In the end if you look at any one photo at Juliland.com you will see there are simple portraits and they will last forever. The greatest photos of our time are usually the simplest ones. Keep it simple and have fun.

My Favorite Model: 43 Outstanding Photographers Portray 44 Gorgeous Models is an interesting photo anthology from Goliath. With a couple of exceptions, each entry fulfills the inspired idea of having a series of images of the same beautiful woman photographed by the same photographer. Some of these are quite varied and show a real range of looks and some are more specific in appearance. It is interesting to consider how a single photographer might work in a variety of ways with one specific muse. I wonder if each of these muses is really that specific photographer’s favorite model, as these appear to be all accomplished people who have shot many women, but it is very nice to look at and interesting to think about. My Favorite Model was well-edited by Miki Bunge and Stephanie Kuhnen and nicely designed by Tanja Oberst. The book closes with a mini-bio of each photographer, however, and lists details of things like what equipment they use, which could be very useful for aspiring visual artists. I wish they had done full interviews with the photographers and not just the models because, if the idea is that the model is the photographer’s favorite or one of their favorites, then I’d like to know what the reasons are. The images are all high quality artistic erotica, but the styles are visually very varied in terms of type of scene and colors and general feel, which really holds the reader’s interest. The amount of alt cred in this book really shows how much the alt aesthetic is infiltrating all things artistic and erotic.

One of my favorite series in the book is the cool damp blue-toned shots of Michaela by Richard Murrien. I also like the rough and tumble look of Zamra by Josef Botello, the gothic fetish cuteness of Valeria by Emma Delves-Broughton, and the dark vintage fetish elegance of Eden by Sabine Schoenberger. The only model to be featured by more than one photographer in the book is altmodel Ulorin Vex (Bizarre , SuicideGirls, Nena Blue by Katja Ehrhardt and by Russell Coleman. Review: Tristan Taormino’s House of Ass

When I first watched Tristan Taormino’s House of Ass, all I could think was “How could you pack this much porn on one DVD?” With 2.5 hours of feature footage, 20 minutes of behind-the-scenes footage, 16 minutes of slide-shows, 16 minutes of bonus scenes, and about 15 minutes of trailers, it’s a supersized meal of naughty goodness. Plus, it gives the viewer some interesting insights into the lives and thoughts of adult performers.

Set in a lavish hillside home, HoA’s premise is to gather several porn stars together, let them hang out, and let them decide with whom/where/when they want to “work.” Interspersed with the sex scenes are several interviews with the performers, talking about their sex lives, the industry, and the like. It’s an interesting approach, and is quite a bit more revealing and intimate than any mainstream porn I’ve encountered.

The movie starts out with a casual conversation about sex and attraction between the cast members. This segues into an introduction of Joanna Angel and her session with Scott Nails. Joanna talks a little about a high school crush she had, and how Scott reminds her of this dude. She then gets herself worked up by cleaning the tub, a curious but convenient fetish. She and Scott proceed to get busy in a tub, doing what Joanna presumably wished she could have done with her HS boy, but never got the chance. Quite enthusiastic, these two kids.

Next up is an hot girl-on-girl session with Sarah Blake and Justine Joli. They first hand select an arsenal of toys and then its off to the terrace for a good time on the futon mattress. Sarah and Justine giggled a lot at first (nerves, perhaps?). But soon that either ceased, or the action got so yummy that I just forgot about it. This is a must see just for the tuning fork dildo. Ding!

Then came Mr. Marcus and Keaani Lei. The expected good times go down, but Keaani is surprisingly open and affectionate in her confessional segment afterwards, calling it “magical.”

Marcus and Joanna Angel get together next, apparently for Joanna’s first scene with an african-american. It’s always struck me as deeply lame that interracial coupling is essentially a fetish in mainstream porn, and Joanna’s comments during the preceding interview caused a bit of controvery: “Does it make me racist if I let a white stranger come all over my face but not a black one?” Well… the line between preference and racism may not be as clear as we’d like, and if Joanna’s confuzzled about this one, it’s not surprising that much of the industry is racially ass-backwards.

Then it’s on to the girl-on-girl-on-girl-on-girl action. This orgyriffic Female Fantastic Four get groovy with lots of licking, sucking, biting, smacking, moaning, grunting, fingering, gasping, hugging, giggling, and spreading. Lots of toys and lube; great girl-girl action.

House of Ass is all in all a great flick, with plenty of great looking women, strapping young lads, and intriguing insights into their personalities. If I have a complaint, it’s that I would have loved to have seen more of producer/director Tristan Taormino. She was 2nd hottest woman (in my opinon) in the film, and it would have beeen great to see her getting more involved in the action (although the concept of the film probably preclulded this). Alas, I’ll have to seek out more of her work to see her in action.
