We were just sent to this great interview with alternative erotic artist Carlos Batts and his sexy creative partner April Flores. The interviewer, JD Bauchery, asks about how they got started and how they met and all sorts of background I never knew about these two, both of whom I’ve always enjoyed. The 2011 Good For Her Feminist Porn Awards were held this past week from April 13 to 15. As a feminist and a queer woman, I often wonder whether altporn is intrinsically feminist or whether feminist porn is intrinsically alt. Looking at the nominees for this year’s Feminist Porn Awards, I am struck by how much crossover there is and isn’t. Courtney Trouble from Nofauxxx had multiple nominations. Talent from Burning Angel in nominated productions included Dana Dearmond who was the very first person naked on the Burning Angel site, Jiz Lee who has had hot sex with Joanna Angel herself on camera, reigning Burning Angel cock James Deen who has appeared in so many videos and photos that he must be the hardest working man in porn, and Andy San Dimas who appears in 14 Burning Angel photo sets and 7 videos. GodsGirls also has 11 sets of Andy San Dimas and 22 sets of Ariel X. Ariel X, Jiz Lee, and Dana Dearmond also appear on Blue Blood and other Blue Blood talent in nominated productions inluded Aiden Starr, Justine Joli, Sasha Grey, Syd Blakovich, Madison Young, and my future gorgeous wife April Flores. Blue Blood senior photographer Carlos Batts was nominated multiple times for his directing.

The talent and producer overlaps make me feel like there is a relationship between alt and feminism, but I don’t think it is as strong a one as I would like. I was happy to see Courtney Trouble take home wins for Most Tantalizing Trans Film and Honoured Websites. Most of the other winners showed the same pattern as the mainstream porn awards i.e. a lot of alt people always get nominated, but a smaller percentage win than seems right to me. Although Courtney Trouble speaks passionately about indie porn, the Feminist Porn Awards were certainly not very indie-oriented, with nominated productions from huge porn companies like Private, Vivid, and Wasteland. Is alt intrinsically indie or does not being indie make something intrinsically not alt?

Food for thought anyway. I’d like to see more of the award shows, which like to decorate their halls with alt performers and producers, give awards to those same very decorative personalities.
