AVN Awards: AVN Still Clueless on Alt, BurningAngel Still Awesome

Once again, BurningAngel has swept the AVN Awards with more than 30 nomination. Alternative girls seem to be rocking the AVN Awards in general this year. Some of the hot alt women honored include April Flores, Jiz Lee, Joanna Angel, Belladonna, Annika Amour, Skin Diamond, Arabelle Raphael, Bonnie Rotten, Jessie Lee, Justine Joli, Kleio Valentine, Nikki Hearts, Kelly Shibari, Christy Mack, Courtney Trouble, Dana Dearmond, Asphyxia Noir, Aiden Starr, Andy San Dimas, and Stoya. Some of the hot alt gentlemen honored include James Deen, Wolf Hudson, Xander Corvus, Tommy Pistol, Michael Vegas, Buck Angel, Mr. Pete, and Danny Wylde. I’m sure I’m missing some who others would count or who I just didn’t catch in the long list from the AVN Awards site. For example, I wouldn’t necessarily have picked Justine Joli out, except that BlueBlood has 22 updates of her and BurningAngel has 2, so I’m going to defer to their judgment that she counts. Something about Bonnie Rotten just seems like a conformist regular girl with a lot of tattoos, but she does have a lot of tattoos, so I’m including her too.

But I do have some quibbles. First, I couldn’t find any legit listings (non-torrent) for Penthouse’s Steampunk Alternasluts (nominated for Best Web Premiere), and I’m not going to click on a torrent link in Google, so I’m just guessing from the name that Penthouse must have done something alt there (although not being able to find it buts a question mark next to Best Web Premiere.) Second, how did BurningAngel get nominated for Best Original Song, but not for Best Soundtrack? Third and more significantly, like last year’s AVN Awards Best Alternative Site nominations, I am scratching my head again this year. WTF does AVN think “alternative” means? Despite the cluelessness on what the alt genre is all about, AVN still honored a lot of cool hard-working alternative performers and other creative people. Maybe the plus here is that alt is becoming sufficiently recognized that it is not ghettoized into one little category, but can win across the board. Here we are all rooting for BurningAngel to take home the wins again.

Creative director Carlos Batts delivers the third in his April Flores centric art-porn series, which originally kicked off with Alter Ego. April has such good chemistry one film as well as pictures and it’s always fun to see more of her. April and I first thought of this as an extension of the photography we’d created the first 4 years of our relationship. We shot so much, all the time; we just needed another medium to help document the speed at which we recorded our lives. After making Alter Ego we were hesitant about doing another video project because we were not trying to make a pseudo artist adult film, or gonzo porn. We just wanted to try to document our lives for artistic reasons. The video camera became a natural extension of the art.
