Gothic Beauty 25 Year Reunion of Original Artists, Lots of Great Swag

Gothic Beauty Magazine is doing such a short Kickstarter that I almost missed that this was happening. They are kickstarting a calendar which features some of their favorite images from their 25 years of publishing, with a focus on their early years. (Personally, I’m going to pledge for the calendar, plus I need lots of Gothic Beauty Boxes and T-shirt reward.)

Although Gothic Beauty is a SFW magazine, one which, in my opinion, verges on the prudish, a lot of the best altporn photographers have been published in the magazine. I think this is because, no matter how soft or explicit, alt work has a lot of style and attitude, so a lot of models we would love naked and sexy in the alt world obviously look fantastic and stylish with their clothes on as well. The look and subcultures are the throughlines.

For this Project, the Gothic Beauty team has pulled together a who’s who of early two thousands alternative photography and altmodel work, with many contributors you will recognize. Alt aficionados will be particularly pleased to see contributions from AltStar Hall of Famer Amelia G (BlueBlood, GothicSluts, BarelyEvil, EroticFandom), AltStar Hall of Famer Forrest Black (BlueBlood, GothicSluts, BarelyEvil, EroticFandom), Apnea (GodsGirls, SuicideGirls, SuperCult), Angela Ryan (BurningAngel, CrazyBabe, ShinySluts, HollyRandall, MisterDevious, RetroKitten, BlueBlood), Ulorin Vex (HollyRandall, LatexHeaven), Lithium Picnic (SuicideGirls), Darenzia (Juliland, GodsGirls, BlueBlood, GothicSluts, BarelyEvil, EroticFandom), Batty (BlueBlood, GothicSluts, BarelyEvil), and more. California Deathrock Art Book

The good people at Blue Blood just dropped me a line and mentioned they are working on a press release about their launch party for the California Deathrock coffee table book and it reminded them to drop me a line about when I might be posting a book review. So I had them send over a few exclusive images from the book to share with APN readers. Blue Blood is the publisher of this huge coffee table book of gothic punk deathrock hotness. It is no secret that I love me some pale goth girls and nobody shoots gorgeous pale goth girls like Forrest Black and Amelia G. Although the book features only occasional boobs, it is still very sexy so, if you are a fan of GothicSluts, you will enjoy this book. Gorgeous hardcover coffee table book. A whopping 172 pages of deathrock gothic punk portraits with intense personality and viscerally saturated colors.

From the introduction: “Since the mid-1990’s, Forrest and I have been setting up full blown location studios in all sorts of unlikely and underground places. We’ve set up lights and backdrops in wind-blown theater parking lots in the middle of the night, while bands played their shows, in co-ed strip clubs, and crammed behind the pool table in the back of noisy dive bars. Sometimes it’s a real challenge, but this is how we shoot our personal work. We like to capture the moments in their real environments. For this compendium, we chose only images which were actually shot in California. Some of the deathrockers in this volume grew up here and some are transplants and some were just passing through. Forrest and I had a lot of debates, while hunched over a contact sheet with loupes in hand, over whether a particular photo was really more deathrock or more Gothic, as we needed a methodology for honing down what to share. If there were a prize for auctioning off the strangest item used in a shoot, I think BlueBlood would have just won it. Everyone who knows artists knows that they never have as many art supplies as they would like. One of the best ways for photographers and models to finance getting art supplies for new shoots is to sell off items from prior shoots. I have this theory that all the erotic sites which utilize both are music culture influenced. From a creative standpoint, what do you like about color versus black and white?

Richard Avery: Wow! That’s a tough one. I have many thoughts and opinions on photography today, digital, color, b&w and the future. I’ll give you some of the basics… No matter what you do or use, there has to be a vision behind it. As an artist it doesn’t matter what you do or who you do. You just have to show that you know what you want and are very clear. Quality is most important. b&w or color, it just needs to be good. Today most photographers rely on photoshop tricks and forget about the subject. Tricks are for kids!!! A great photo is one that will last the test of time. I am old school and love b&w, but I enjoy color a lot as well. That is why we have fun with both. Some set-ups look good in color, but some just scream… Do me in b&w! Last, most photographers make the mistake of trying to do too much. All I try and do is capture the grrl and who she is. Personality is what I do. In the end if you look at any one photo at Juliland.com you will see there are simple portraits and they will last forever. The greatest photos of our time are usually the simplest ones. Keep it simple and have fun.
