Shot at the biggest AltStar Expo yet, this is a gallery of photos of the exhibits and media halls and just fun convention candids. 2025 marked the expansion to four days of fun. The first two days of the AltStar Expo were Industry only and then there was the brand new Fan Appreciation Day, followed by the AltStar Awards on the last day.

In addition to three days packed with panels and demos from top industry experts, the AltStar Expo has an exhibitor hall with booths from content and toy brands in the alt space, alongside carefully curated purveyors of everything deliciously alternative, from gothic jewelry to 3d printed kink, and, of course, on the Fan Appreciation Day, tons of wonderful altmodels. Attendees were able to shop for hard-to-find unique toys in person and get information about content creation and marketing and streaming. In addition, a lot of collaborative media was created right on the show floor. Once again, a cross section of world’s top Dominatrixes, fetish models, fetish photographers, artisanal toymakers,performance artists, sex educators and kinky lifestylers returned this June to Los Angeles for the DomCon LA 2024. Originally conceived by the legendary matriarch of the LA kink scene, Mistress Cyan, DomCon has been and continues to be an cherished opportunity for the kink community to come together, socialize, learn, network, create content, and play hard.

Each year DomCon begins Wednesday with industry-only seminars addressing safety, legal issues, and such advanced BDSM techniques as safely engaging in edge play. The first event of pageantry and pomp is the red carpet social Thursday evening where it’s dress to shock and
impress. The red carpet is followed by the awards ceremony and Mistress Dinner.

On Friday, the vendor hall opens where attendees can shop for exquisite next-level BDSM gear for the serious player, dungeon rentals, and erotic art. Friday night is a no-holds-barred play party spanning two full banquet rooms of the hotel. All photography including professional cameras and smartphones is strictly prohibited. So in order to see it, one would need to experience it.

Saturday opens with the Mistress Photo Shoot in the Malibu Courtyard, an annual feeding frenzy for photographers. Later that night is the storied DomCon Fetish Ball, much like the Friday play party, but far glitzier. Like Friday, photos are strictly prohibited.

Sunday is always a surreal blend of warm afterglow, melancholy with the realization that it’s over, and the gravity of the logistics of leaving. Most attendees are packing and checking out of the hotel, trying to make the noon checkout deadline, many trying to make their flights, all the while, saying sad goodbyes. I have always likened it to coming up and out of the rabbit hole.

DomCon occurs every May, though it fell in June this year. If you just cannot wait until then, you can attend DomCon New Orleans in October. Rumors of DomCon Europe are still just that – rumors. But let’s keep our fingers crossed. For more information visit DomCon.com

A while back, I wrote a post about how Blue Blood‘s Amelia G was speaking on a panel at Vampire Con and then she and Blue Blood’s Forrest Black were setting up a location studio at the closing party. The pictures they shot that night are now up in a free Vampire Con portrait gallery, along with a write-up of the event written by Amelia G. I laughed out loud at the humorous part of the article where she talks about meeting Dennis Hof from HBO’s Cathouse show there. I watch Cathouse from time to time and it is about the goings-on at a swanky legal brothel called The Bunny Ranch in Nevada. It seems Dennis Hof brought a Transylvanian escort to Vampire Con and she was one of the many people photographed in the Blue Blood event studio that night.

It is no secret that I love the vampire genre. I received Honors at Wesleyan University for my thesis on vampire legends as a paradigm for aggressive human sexuality. And I would like the record to show that I will be speaking on exactly that topic this weekend at Vampire Con in Hollywood. I’ll be taking part in the panel programming Sunday afternoon, after the movie nights, and before Vampirella’s Ball (more on this in a moment.) The panel I am on is called Hot-Blooded: Vampires & Sexuality and is at 1pm at the Henry Fonda Theater on Hollywood Blvd. It will be moderated by David J. Skal, Author of Hollywood Gothic and V Is For Vampire: The A-Z Guide Of Everything Undead. I’m especially excited that Pam Keesey, who I’m looking forward to catching up with will be on the panel. She is the editor of multiple anthologies of lesbian vampire tales, Women Who Run with the Werewolves: Tales of Blood, Lust, and Metamorphosis, and Vamps: An Illustrated History of the Femme Fatale. Pam Keesey has a very engaging personality, has published yours truly, and once gave me a tour of Forrest Ackerman’s memorabilia collection. Other panelists are Hal Bodner, author of Bite Club: A West Hollywood Vampire Tale, filmmaker Fred Olen Ray from The Lair, actress Celeste Yarnall, best known at a vamp convention for her role in The Velvet Vampire, but who has appeared in everything from Melrose Place to Star Trek, and best-selling author, comic book writer, and filmmaker Donald F. Glut who recently directed the Elizabeth Bathory-inspired movie Blood Scarab. And we’ll be talking about vampire sex.

That evening, at the same venue, from 8:30pm to 1am, there will be Vampirella’s Ball. The music will be provided by DJ Xian and DJ Gary Calamar, music supervisor of HBO’s True Blood and KCRW radio DJ. Vampire Con describes the appropriate attire saying, “Costumes are thoroughly encouraged – Vampires, Victorian, Edwardian, Steampunk, Bohemian, Tribal, Gypsy.”

Forrest Black and I will have a location studio set up to photograph people involved in the event, revelers who most exemplify the themes of the event, and our close personal friends (i.e. not everyone, but photographic subjects best for doing press coverage on Vampire Con.) If we know you from online, please come find us on the roof Sunday night (or at my panel during the day) and say hello and where we know you from. As some of you may already know, a bunch of the BrokenDollz crew gathered up from all over the place to attend a north eastern tattoo convention a few weeks back and by the looks of the pictures they have sent us, they all sure had a great time. It’s really good to see a site generate such a positive sense of unity and fun.
