BlueBlood‘s Amelia G and Forrest Black, the authors of the California Deathrock project, have taken a few photos of the gorgeous Scarlet Starr in the official California Deathrock T-shirt. What way to promote a T-shirt, than putting it on a steamy girl, right? Scarlet Starr was an inspired choice, she has beautiful hair, a doll face and those perky breasts of hers fill out the T-shirt very nicely. You can’t wear a T-shirt that awesome, and not have a bad-ass attitude, so our model is giving the finger to the viewer, you know you like it! Too bad the T-shirt doesn’t come with the foxy lady included, right?

California Deathrock Art Book

The good people at Blue Blood just dropped me a line and mentioned they are working on a press release about their launch party for the California Deathrock coffee table book and it reminded them to drop me a line about when I might be posting a book review. So I had them send over a few exclusive images from the book to share with APN readers. Blue Blood is the publisher of this huge coffee table book of gothic punk deathrock hotness. It is no secret that I love me some pale goth girls and nobody shoots gorgeous pale goth girls like Forrest Black and Amelia G. Although the book features only occasional boobs, it is still very sexy so, if you are a fan of GothicSluts, you will enjoy this book. I probably did not pick out everyone, but a few of the girls I recognized from Blue Blood and GothicSluts in the 172 colorful pages of this hardcover include Domiana, Dahlia Dark, Fetus de Milo, Darenzia, Dana Dark, Zille, Agent Aeon, Secret Sin, and, of course, the notorious Malice McMunn on the cover and inside. I think Beda backed the Kickstarter for this book, so she might weigh in later. Gorgeous hardcover coffee table book. A whopping 172 pages of deathrock gothic punk portraits with intense personality and viscerally saturated colors.

From the introduction: “Since the mid-1990’s, Forrest and I have been setting up full blown location studios in all sorts of unlikely and underground places. We’ve set up lights and backdrops in wind-blown theater parking lots in the middle of the night, while bands played their shows, in co-ed strip clubs, and crammed behind the pool table in the back of noisy dive bars. Sometimes it’s a real challenge, but this is how we shoot our personal work. We like to capture the moments in their real environments. For this compendium, we chose only images which were actually shot in California. Some of the deathrockers in this volume grew up here and some are transplants and some were just passing through. Forrest and I had a lot of debates, while hunched over a contact sheet with loupes in hand, over whether a particular photo was really more deathrock or more Gothic, as we needed a methodology for honing down what to share. APN Award nominees Amelia G and Forrest Black, of Blue Blood fame, are doing a coffee table book of deathrock style. If the example pictures are any indication, I am going to memorize every page for gothic makeup and clothing ideas. According to the BlueBlood blog, some of the altmodels I have enjoyed on their membership sites will be in the California Deathrock book. This includes Dahlia Dark, Merrydeath, Domiana, and Vampirabat. Those are some enormous gorgeous deathrock boobies. I love all of these girls’ style. Also according to the BlueBlood blog, there are only a couple hours left to pledge via Kickstarter, but you’ll be able to also buy the book later via Barnes & Noble and Amazon, just for a higher price. Looks like they are two dollars away from doing the book as a hardcover. I can’t wait until California Deathrock comes out! I love this photography.

Since the mid-1990’s, my partner Forrest Black and I have been setting up location studios in all sorts of unlikely and underground places. We’ve shot our personal work everywhere from behind the pool table in a dive bar to in the parking lot behind a theatre where we had to run a bunch of end-to-end extension cords out the back to power our lights.

When we started shooting, there were very few photographers who would ever shoot anyone gothic or punk or tattooed or pierced or fetish and the few who did approached the subject matter in a gritty unattractive anthropological manner, like they were going to the zoo. I wanted to create respectful and celebratory work. I wanted to capture the joy and tribal sense of community which I experienced in the various subterranean worlds we documented. I wanted the flamboyant beauty I saw to resonate with other people the way it did for me. I wanted the people we photographed to look the way they looked in my mind’s eye when I recalled the excitement of nightlife at midnight.

The West Coast deathrock scene has been one of Forrest’s and my favorite subcultures to shoot. We’ve been immortalizing deathrockers for more than a decade now. I love the way deathrock tends to combine the stylishness of gothic culture with the no apologies attitude of punk.

We’ve shot deathrock bands ranging from Cinema Strange to 45 Grave. We’ve shot DJs and promoters from Satoki and Thee Gabe to Shane Taleda and Jenn and Dave Bats. We’ve shot publishers from New Grave’s Matt Riser to Ghastly’s Jeremy. We’ve shot deathrock pinups from Dahlia Dark and Domiana to Scar 13 and Fetus de Milo. Plus a huge assortment of other folks who make the scene what it is, from author Clint Catalyst to clothing designer Karen Schultz.

I would love to be able to present our deathrock body of work as a coffee table book. Approximately 40% of these images were shot on film, so we will need to get scanning done. We can’t work on the computer like we used to, so we’ll need some graphics help processing the most recent digital images. And of course we need to print the book. These are the things we will use the funding for, if we meet our Kickstarter goal. If we exceed our goal, we will add more pages and, if we exceed our goal by a bunch, then we will do a larger print run with full wholesale bookstore distribution.

Deathrock Book Project from Blue Blood Photographers

We are all obsessing about the 2012 AltPorn Awards here, but I wanted to post this BTS video of APN’s 2011 Best Alternative Erotica Photographer winners doing photo shoots. Amelia G and Forrest Black will be familiar to APN readers for their work with Blue Blood and its various sites. For this project, they are working on a book of gothic punk portraiture of people in the California deathrock scene over the past decade or so. Because Amelia G and Forrest Black are doing the project on Kickstarter, I can see that they have reached the successful fully-funded stage where the book is definitely going to be published. I’m planning on backing this Kickstarter project myself because I want a signed copy of the book with my name and thanks in the book. The way Kickstarter works, I can pledge any time before June 7 and then I only get the charge from Amazon at the end of the pledge drive. I am really looking forward to seeing this book. I like that they don’t just shoot naked people and when they do shoot, they don’t just dress people up to look ‘punk’ for the camera.

Kickstarter crowdfunding just succeeded for a book of deathrock subculture
photography by Amelia G and Forrest Black. Best known for their work with
Blue Blood, the photography of Amelia G and Forrest Black has also been
published by Rolling Stone, Playboy, Tattoo Savage, Picture, MTV, Orkus,
New Grave, Permission, Alternative Press, Meltdown, Ghastly, Sonic Seducer,
and many others.

For more than a decade, Amelia G and Forrest Black’s personal work has been
documenting various subcultures. Amelia G says the West Coast deathrock
scene has been one of their favorite subcultures to shoot. Publishing a
fifteen year retrospective of deathrock imagery would definitely be a labor
of love, so the subculture documentarians appealed to their friends and
readers to back a Kickstarter project to put the book out.

As of today, the Kickstarter is successful, with the project 110% funded
and 11 days to go in the pledge drive. Amelia G says she is “super happy
and more than a little relieved” that the Kickstarter has succeeded and
additional funding pledges between now and June 7 will go to more pages and
wider bookstore distribution. Connoisseurs of deathrock and art photography
can continue to pledge via Kickstarter up until June 7 at 5pm Pacific.
Backers who pre-order the book will be thanked in print inside it.
