Gothic Beauty 25 Year Reunion of Original Artists, Lots of Great Swag

Gothic Beauty Magazine is doing such a short Kickstarter that I almost missed that this was happening. They are kickstarting a calendar which features some of their favorite images from their 25 years of publishing, with a focus on their early years. (Personally, I’m going to pledge for the calendar, plus I need lots of Gothic Beauty Boxes and T-shirt reward.)

Although Gothic Beauty is a SFW magazine, one which, in my opinion, verges on the prudish, a lot of the best altporn photographers have been published in the magazine. I think this is because, no matter how soft or explicit, alt work has a lot of style and attitude, so a lot of models we would love naked and sexy in the alt world obviously look fantastic and stylish with their clothes on as well. The look and subcultures are the throughlines.

For this Project, the Gothic Beauty team has pulled together a who’s who of early two thousands alternative photography and altmodel work, with many contributors you will recognize. One of my favorite things about this Project is they are posting regular in-depth interviews on the Kickstarter where contributors share behind-the-scenes moments and their thoughts on goth. These are some really excellent and interesting interviews.

I recently read an interview with Apnea where she explained her new approach for the media she puts on her Apneatic site. She explained that she no longer wants to just put up content for content’s sake. Instead, she wants to make sure every image is a keeper, worthy of being a stand alone portfolio piece. It means fewer images and more well produced conceptual videos. The results are pretty spectacular and I don’t think too many of her members miss 150 pictures of her just sitting in a chair, as she describes it. I think it’s great that she really embraces what should be good about creating this sort of work. It should be creative and done with care for concept and detail. She shared this piece along with a funny unrelated story about stealing cars with her old roommate in Houston. I have to say that I really like how she’s doing things. Today Nena Blue announced that they have “68 Exclusive High Quality Photos” of Apnea. The set is called Waffles and is shot by Lithium Picnic. Even if you do not recall that this exact same set posted to Apnea‘s blog November 17, 2007 and to the Apneatic members area November 20, 2007, (We covered the update in December of 2007) if you are at all a fan of alt, you are probably aware of how unlikely a new set like this would be. Apnea just announced a hot upcoming gallery show featuring her boyfriend Chase Lisbon of Supercult. More photos from my 23rd birthday. That was a pretty big day for me. I don’t know long long you’ve been reading my blog but I was anticipating this day since I was 17 because I knew whatever happened when I turned 23 would change my life. And my life did completely change so it wasn’t all me just being a nut.

We’re going on another trip tomorrow so I’m in the middle of a dreaded “travel night” where I get no sleep and work up until the last minute before I have to drive three hours to the airport and almost miss a flight. And there’s a snowstorm coming in tomorrow so not only will I almost miss a flight tomorrow but I’ll almost or will miss the connecting flight we have to make.

Hopefully this is the last trip out of town I have to make to get lasered. Katie is getting a laser for her shop soon and I’ll be the one everyone can practice with.

The last week has been crazy. I was laid out for five days with some kind of sickness but after going through a month supply of vitamin c gummi bears in less than a week and sleeping 14 hours a day I made it back to health in time to work every minute I can on my new project. I still have something wrong in my head and I’m actually really scared to fly tomorrow. The last time I flew with a head cold it felt like I had needles in my eyes and they were going to explode from pressure. They’re already starting to feel like that and I’m just sitting here at my desk.

I now have 12 hours before I leave and I really need to pack. I’ll update from wherever I am and you can come on my adventure with me

Apnea just posted this beautiful video, or portion of a video anyway, over on her blog, along with a really humorous and entertaining little story about preparing for and shooting it with Chase Lisbon. I love the mood and look of it and for a ‘censored’ video, it sure is hotter than a lot of the ‘uncensored’ stuff we see.

When Chase and I were living in Savannah we were so excited to shoot a video in the pool. But we didn’t know anything about shooting underwater so trying to figure it out was interesting.

First we drove to Target and bought some Maglites, freezer bags, a snorkel, duct tape and nylon rope. I’m sure we looked really suspicious when we were checking out.

Later that night it was time for me to get ready. I didn’t have the first clue about how to apply makeup for going underwater, so I applied three times as much and my skin felt like it was going to scream.

Then I walked out to the pool to meet Chase. It’s 3am, the neighbors are asleep, it’s freezing outside, and I see him throwing a cinder block into the pool with a rope tied around it. I remember thinking that looked really unsafe, but it was also really funny.

We got in the pool and I was so cold and shivering so hard the only words that could come out of my mouth was a string of obscenities. Luckily Chase was tied to a huge piece of concrete at the deep end of a pool so he didn’t have to see it. Then when it was time to shoot I couldn’t stay underwater. My dress was so heavy and buoyant. It felt like I was connected to a parachute. . But the dress came off! And we taped enough to get what we needed.

So after typing all of that I should let you know that only half of this was taped in the pool. The other half was taped in a very dry, climate controlled environment.

Zivity: Apnea Can Has Schwing

Beautiful photographic muse Apnea has demonstrated her charming power to move the masses again with her recently posted Zivity collaboration with SuperCult‘s Chase Lisbon. Their photographic contribution has not only broken the site’s all time record for most set votes within a 24 hour period, it has also now received more votes than any other set ever posted to the site. I have some reservations about very heavily funded UGC membership sites that not only pay for their content contributions based on ‘votes’ (traffic) you as a contributor manage to get yourself by doing their promotion work for them, but also also manage to deliver that payout significantly after they get to use your contribution. People seem excited about the system, but I know a few alt models that have made more money than this set will probably eventually pay out, simply by signing up for the affiliate programs of the alt sites their sets go up on and doing the same sort of self promotion, and they get paid faster too. Anyway, it is good to see Apnea really making a power statement and these really are some very sexy stylish photos deserving of accolade.

Lithium Picnic: Slaps Supporters in Face

I caught this hilarious post by Lux Nightmare on Fleshbot the other morning and thought it was just too funny not to share.

The underlying story of how Philip Warner, AKA Lithium Picnic is back to cheerfully promoting and defending SuicideGirls however is really disappointing. When he found himself at odds with his exclusionary employer SuicideGirls, he cried far and wide, pleading for everyone in the scene to take up his cause with his ‘Free Lithium Picnic’ merch machine and calls for benefit art shows and donation drives, etc. There wasn’t a place on the internet that someone could mention that they kind of think maybe altporn bully SuicideGirls is a ‘blight on our scene’ or whatever without at least a handful of LP supporters and questionable sock puppets interjecting ‘Free Lithium Picnic’ at every turn. Yet somehow the rhetoric seemed mismatched with what few facts had emerged about the $100,000 breach of contract case SuicideGirls had brought against Philip. Although we have been supportive of getting the facts out there as best we can in the past, we’ve never really bought in to the ensuing hype, despite the well intentioned efforts of sites like DeviantNation, who went so far as to pass along a neat little ‘Free Lithium Picnic’ chipin donation flash widgets that they wanted sites like APN to to run so that Philip could generate more funds.

One of the main reasons we do not cover SuicideGirls more often here at APN is that we’ve seen SuicideGirls notoriously controlling contracts and frankly, they don’t look that difficult to find yourself in breach of. I could see participating in legal fee fund raisers and other charity events once the court found Philip Warner not guilty, but if he was guilty of breach, then giving him money would just be a waste. APN attempted to interview Lithium Picnic about what the fight with SG was actually over, but we were informed that we would only be able to interview Apnea instead, as he was not supposed to discuss legal issues pertaining to the case. Not that we ever mind talking to hot and adorable Apnea and she was very helpful and informative in every interaction. However if, like APN, you have been wondering about the actual details of this legal battle, Lux Nightmare’s Fleshbot post links to where Amelia G over at BlueBlood.net wrote SuicideGirls vs Lithium Picnic Lawsuit Settled, which is an excellent deconstruction of the lawsuit and the community’s response to it. The feeling over there seems to be that Apnea is innocent, but LP is at the very least guilty of selling out the principles he asked so many to sacrifice for and support. Not that we mind if ultra sexy and cute Apnea turns out to be the only good guy in the whole legal mess.

I guess what I’m saying is that I’ve never been 100% convinced Lithium Picnic was actually innocent. He worked for SuicideGirls for a long time. He was there when they we’re pulling all sorts of shady business with their models. One falling out among a clan of bad people doesn’t suddenly transform someone into being the good guy. It would be nice if he were innocent, but there was a strong chance he actually wasn’t. We were looking forward to the court’s decision to make everything clear.

NenaBlue: Glam Nude Apnea

I just ran across this ultra sexy new Apnea gallery on the erotic photography site NenaBlue.com and I knew some of you would be interested. These photos of Apnea are really hot and tasty! The site is a little pricey and kind of pretentious in it’s presentation, but the quality of their content is pretty impressive. It’s not all appealing to an alt-eye, but there are some really interesting and creative yet explicit sets on there. I did recognize some sets from Chad Michael Ward that I really like and have been available on Blue Blood for quite some time now, although near as I can tell, only a few are currently on NenaBlue.com. But, the important part is that sexy Apnea looks great in these!

This recent series of Apnea is just great! It’s like a pleasant dream, really. Adorable Apnea digging in to an astoundingly large pile of waffles of all shapes and sizes, and that’s before it gets weird! The creative concepts Apnea shares on her Apneatic site really do manage to play with the lines between what we expect in a nudie model site and real creative exploration. The portion of the shoot where she’s showering with waffles should not be missed by anyone interested in… well, hot girls and waffles, and that’s got to be averybody I know.

Mark McKinney’s Chicken Lady was one of the most depressing characters on Kids in the Hall and I just couldn’t get the thought of her out of my head while checking out this crazy set from Apneatic. I do really enjoy the odd surrealistic approach she takes in a lot of her shoots, they seem really fun and creative and not always as focused on ‘you want me very badly, don’t you’ as some girls can get when they are in front of the camera, Apparently, these were shot by Lithium Picnic sort of behind the scenes style, while Robert Sebree was shooting Apnea out in the California desert. Apnea is hot and all, but the chicken mask is not nearly as sexy as her panda head.

There is something really intimate that we love about self shot photo sets. It’s like a certain mix of the sort of up close point of view you’d have if you were really rolling around in bed with, or even curled up with, the sexy person taking the shots, as well as that certain realness of a photo series you know the subject of which edited down themselves to show you just what they wanted to. This recent set Apnea shot of herself and posted to her site is really hot and sexy. She’s got these great sort of meshy panties on that reveal just enough detail of her smooth bare skin underneath while still being charmingly coy and the flirty expressions she’s making with the camera make it all very exciting to look through.

After the doctor diagnosed Stoya with “clothing-itis”, it was my job to help her through recovery. Dr. Steen instructed me to remove all articles of clothing immediately, and if the patient were to start feeling faint to let her have a breath of fresh air. Her legs had to be spread while I gave her the air though in order for the treatment to work.
