For a site listed in our AltPorn ‘A’ List, BrokenDollz has kind of been flying below the radar for a bit. As far as the genre goes, it’s one of the younger sites, but so far it’s showing some good signs. We recently took an extensive tour of what they are up to and it certainly looks promising.

BrokenDollz features a kind of homegrown social networking system for it’s members and dollz, with MySpace style profiles, private messaging, bulletins, personal journals, friends lists, testimonial comments, around 50 themed interactive groups, and all that fun stuff. Members can display several of their favorite dollz as well as their favorite sets on their own personal profile and even upload up to 40 of their own images. All of which makes the site very personal. The active membership base is currently not terribly crowded, but the people that do participate on the site are really friendly and personable. I’m sure people could actually find friends there and that is ultimately the goal of this sort of system. On the overall, we found the social networking feature set to be pretty cool and easy to understand, although still a little rough when it comes to look and feel.

The content has that sort of co-opish authentic feeling that some fans of the Alt genre tend to like, even if it comes off as a little less slick in it’s production. There are quite a number of sexy video clips generally featuring their select dollz in intimate solo masturbation scenes with vibrators and such. We particularly liked the clips of Scarlet Rose listening to her iPod on blast and buzzing her clit with a little pink vibrator. Her multiple climaxes came across as genuine and really hot and she seemed totally oblivious to the camera work, instead lost in her music and self pleasure. There is another entertaining section called ‘love letters’ featuring sexy little stroke fiction stories written by a bunch of their dollz and members, along with a few sexy pictures to go with them. Some of the stories even have accompanying downloadable MP3 files of the girls reading their naughty stories aloud, which we found to be a really nicely done bonus. The photo layouts are nicely varied with about 95ish dollz to choose from, many with multiple sets. These sets do tend to come off a bit on the amateurish side, as far as production goes, which potentially works for some people, but not so much for others. It’s really up to the individual taste. We liked quite a few of the layouts, but the image size still needs a little bit of a boost. The pictures run at about 550 pixels in the longest dimension, so the ones seen here are actually full sized, which is quite small by current standards.

One area which we feel could us a little improvement is the way they display current or most recent photo sets. We get the impression that they are working on this area, so maybe it will be in good shape soon, but right now it’s very difficult to look at the photo layouts in the order they were posted. The dollz are listed in a sort of most recent to first on the site chronological order, but the photo layouts are not currently listed that way, so members sort of have to look at the site’s outside tour pages to figure out what has actually posted lately.

So, on the overall, for a new site, BrokenDollz has some pretty cool stuff going on, even if they still have a few areas to work on. A lot of the dollz are hot and the growing community member base is interactive and friendly. It will be interesting to see what the site grows into over time, and for the current price of 20.00 for 3 months, it’s certainly worth checking out.

XFanz, one of the hottest new adult entertainment community and news portal sites, just posted a really nice review of AltPorn.net!

I’m doing something a little different with this review. Instead of, say, writing something properly, I decided to take running notes while I watched. It works out for both of us, because I get to be lazy and not really try, and you get to the experience of being there. Or not.

I should first mention that I don’t watch porn for the plot, and I do not and in fact can not understand why anyone would. As you might have guessed, this porno has a plot, so that’s a pretty big strike against it right there. Fortunately, someone at VCA must agree with me, because one of the “bonus features” is a “sex only alternate version.” Someone deserves a little credit for thinking of that. At any rate, the regular version of the movie doesn’t have all that much of a plot, and the women featured here are all unbelievably hot. Allow me to repeat that: the women are beyond belief. I mention it twice since it is absolutely the only redeeming quality to the movie.

RazorDolls isn’t pretty. It’s kinda hard to read the text much of the time because of the brightly colored, busy backgrounds used. Figuring out the navigation is sometimes a lot harder than it should be. And the site sometimes acts a little funky: asking for login info at odd times and other little glitches. Some might find this endearingly punk rock, sorta like the shitty photocopying and chopped-off text in your friend’s hardcore zine from back in ‘92. Ultimately, though, Content is King, and RD has some really, really good content. The 50 or so models on the site are featured in a similar number of photo sets, mostly solo pinup-type softcore work. There are also about a dozen videos, and these are the crown jewels of the site: gorgeous, sexy, naughty punk rock girls getting off by themselves and each other (and the occasional punk rock boy). Girls like Alley, Stilla and Amber drip (literally!) with a carnal sexuality that I’ve very rarely seen. The camerawork and technical aspects are pretty amateur, but that added a strong sense of realism for me. These videos are by themselves worth every penny of the membership fees. Nearly every site that would fall into the “altporn” genre has stuff like a discussion forum, model blogs, and the like, and RD is no different. I can’t say that the activity in the forums or the blogs blew me away, but we’re reaching a saturation point here, and I wonder if sites like RD are doing themselves a disservice by throwing up big forums that just can’t maintain a respectable level of participation. The most expansive audience that’s out there for this kind of content already has their MSN groups and Myspace and Yahoo 360, and they’re probably not looking for another one. That’s not to say that there’s no value in models, photogs and webmasters interacting with their audience from either a marketing or user experience standpoint, but I wonder if every altporn site should be trying for a vibrant social network. I really like RD, despite some issues with usability. It has hot hot hot content, especially the vids, and is well worth checking out.

If I were to wildly oversimplify things, I could put the kinds of content we cover at altporn.net into two camps: artsy erotica and bonerfying pornography. In reality most of it falls somewhere between the two, with sites like FatalBeauty.com floating over near planet Artsy Erotica, and movies like Joanna’s Angels in a shallow orbit around the celestial sphere of Porn.

Alter Ego, the new film from Carlos Batts, is very, very much in the artsy erotica camp; properly emphasized, the ARTSY erotica camp. AE is a carnival of sensuality and skin and bent gender in slow motion, reminiscent of David Lynch and, less frequently, Andy Warhol.

AE is Carlos Batts’ tribute to April Flores/Fatty D, the voluptuous erotic performer and “super muse” who slides effortlessly between phat azz lowrider chica, living porcelain doll, and deadly stitched-up horror vixen. Batts’ moody, ethereal imagery captures a wide-ranging series of Flores’ erotic experiences, some of them sexy, some of them disturbing. Slow-paced and set to a stew of electro and hip-hop, it’s the kind of thing you watch in a quiet room at 2am when no one’s awake.

The altporn scene is just taking off in the mainstream adult industry, and it’s likely that we’re going to get a lot more punk/goth porn vids on the market. I’m not complaining, because I dig watching punk rawk girls get it on bigtime, but films like Alter Ego are important contrasts to easier-to-swallow porn. We need works like this to remind ourselves of the wide-ranging possibilities of erotic art.
