Welcome to this week’s set! Cultural appropriation? Maybe. Cute? Certainly! I wrestled for a little while about whether it was appropriate to do this kind of Asian-themed gallery, in light of feminist criticisms of cultural stereotyping of Asian women. Ultimately, I came to the conclusion that it’s about as harmful as, say, a set of me in the kitchen with an apron on. It’s cute, and we know better than to think that women all hang out in the kitchen naked all the time, or that they OUGHT to. Right? RIght? It’s fun, with an element of pastiche but ultimately not derogatory to a particular group. Also, the same argument could be made that I appropriate cultural mainstays from the goth subculture in the same set. Hell, it’s all appropriation in the end. Thanks, globalization!
