LiveJournal: AltPorn Community Resurrected

We’re pleased to announce that we’ve gotten our grubby mitts on the AltPorn LiveJournal Community and resurrected it from the dead. So, site owners, models, photographers, artists, and anyone else interested (and age appropriate) are all encouraged to join us and participate. We’ll be rolling out some new rules and guidelines, but we’ve very happy to hold a good general venue for people interested in all aspects of the creative Alt universe. On the downside, all the previous historical posts were unfortunately lost before we were able to take control, but we have confidence that new works will breath life back into the group again.

Altporn A-List Compete.com: January 27 2008

Since we are catching up on a few things. Here are the latest Compete.com rankings for our continuing AltPorn A-List Traffic and Popularity Study. Compete.com reports on a monthly basis, with statistic totals showing from the previous month. This means these are December 2007 stats, not up to the minute, according to Compete.com. The only real news here is the impressive entry of newer sites like GeekGirlsOnline and PunkGrl, hitting the chart in solid positions. CrazyBabe swapped positions with BlueBlood’s GothicSluts, as also reported on the QuantCast stats from yesterday. Otherwise, several sites slipped a slot or two as new sites entered the rankings.

Altporn A-List Alexa: January 1 2008

Happy New Year everyone. We hope you all had a good time and we look forward to a great oh-eight. This month’s AltPorn A-List Traffic and Popularity Study Alexa Edition brings us little change in the standings. BlueBlood’s punky BarelyEvil got a bit of a December bounce, moving up three spots to take the number three spot, rising above their GothicSluts site, as well as Bob Coulter’s CrazyBabe and NaughtyFlipside. It looks like NaughtyFlipside did just enough content to put out a DVD and had not put up anything new since. Should we keep them on the chart as long as they are live, or should there be a limit on non-updating sites? What are your opinions? On the lower rungs of the rankings, relatively young site PunkGrl continued to rise, up two spots, along with another recent addition LazerBunny, also up two spots. Plus, we’ve just added newcomer GeekGirlsOnline, which debuts in slot 21. As always, we encourage your suggestions for more ways to measure the most accurate public measures of AltPorn site traffic and popularity.

Image Standards Question

When you are browsing your favorite AltPorn sites, what size images to you enjoy most? For vertical or portrait images, lately we’ve seen sites running all sorts of different sizes, 1000px, 900px, 800px, 640px high, and for horizontal or landscape we’ve been seeing 1200px, 1000px, 900px, 640px wide. Take a look at your favorite site, with what you feel are the most enjoyable to look at and let us know the picture dimensions you like best on your screen, both for vertical and horizontal shots.

AltPorn Question: Branding Models

At what point is it ok for a site to make their name become part of the girl’s name? Is it a certain number of sets and/or videos? Is it only ok for the first one she was on? The last one she was on? Is it exclusivity? What happens if she then appears on another site? Does she get a divorce and change her name? Some sites seem to feel like their girls really belong to them, and some even seem to have contracts that amount to just that. Others simply pressure girls with threats of disinclusion and hostility. A surprising number of girls even take on certain site names and site initials in their MySpace profile names and other social network services. I’ve even had girls introduce themselves to me, using their site surname. “Hi, I’m Becky Starbucks” That would be weird, so why has it become such a trend in Alt? Some sites are more pushy about this than others and some don’t seem to do it at all. Isn’t branding a girl with a product name kind of the opposite of what this is all supposed to be about? A girl could be Penthouse Pet of the Year, but nobody would expect her to go around calling herselve Ivana Penthouse. What’s up with that? When should it be ok?

Altporn A-List Alexa: October 1 2007

There are no big changes discovered for the October Alexa installment of our AltPorn A-List Traffic and Popularity Study. The Alexa rankings are holding pretty steady with only a couple sites swapping places in ranking. No big jumps or falls to report this month. We still have not figured out the mystery explaining why Deviant Nation’s Alexa rank is near the top of the chart while their certified Quantcast still remains near the bottom of the chart. There is some reemerging debate here about how qualified Naughty Flipside really is, given that their content, although still frequently hot, kind of misses the mark when it comes to authentic AltPorn. It seems a little more Alt as Halloween costume, but then again a lot of the adult video industry ‘AltPorn’ comes across that was to some of us. The jury is still out on that one.

Question About Listing Photo Credits

Some sites are good about listing photo credits for their photo sets and some seem to only list credits if they are very impressed with the photographer. Historically, we at APN have usually not bothered to list photo credits since the information was sporadic at best, but more and more sites are making that information available. I like to know who created my favorite images, but I don’t know how common that interest is. Should we make more of an effort to report who shot the photo sets we report on or is in not really important to you the reader?

We’d really like to get some of your feedback on this.

Altporn ‘A’ List Alexa: April 1, 2007

Things are shaking up a bit on the old AltPorn ‘A’ List tracking chart. Big changes this month include DeviantNation making a big jump up to position three, even narrowly edging out Blue Blood’s GothicSluts, which had been solidly locked in position three for as long as we can remember. BlueBlood’s central site seems to have slipped below BurningAngel. BrokenDollz is continuing their vault up the charts, gaining three positions again this month. Other interesting things of note, CityKittie seems to have been down for at least the last few days, and SpicePlay has temporarily closed for server and software upgrades. They are offering their members access to EroticBPM in the meantime.
